when smucker reported a strong quarter. for importantly, the company said it was buying big heart pet brands for $5.8 billion. this deal was truly transformational. it gave smucker a whole new platform to grow its business, building a three-legged stool of coffee, human food, and pet food, the latter of which is rapidly expanding. the stock shot up the day after the deal was announced. for months after that the big heart pet acquisition, smucker stock marked time, pulling back to as low as 105 in late july. it was trading at 113 last week. basically the same levels when the big heart deal was announced back in february. in part that's because when smucker reported at the beginning of june, the big heart business missed the top and bottom line targets. while the coffee business continued to be slammed by competition, in retrospect it was merely a speed bump, because the next time they reported at the very end of august, smucker's coffee business had finally found a bottom. coffee sales rising 4% year over year. on top of tha

joining us in a first on cnbc interview, jm smucker ceo mark smucker. thanks for being here. you were able to demonstrate some pretty strong pricing power this quarter. consumer appear to be willing to pay up 9 percentage points for your product. how much appetite is there to continue that pricing power from here on out? do you see price growth slowing dramatically or even coming down at all? >> you know, leslie, thanks for having me. first of all, most of our pricing actions took place over the last 18 months or so. we still consider we are in an inflationary environment, although we have seen some relief on coffee. we have been very focused on making sure that if we do pass along inflation, we do it in a very prudent way, work with our retail customers and do so in a way that is cost justified. our brands have been able to hold this pricing and demonstrate both dollar and volume growth during this time period. >> obviously part of that, too, are higher costs are encouraging more americans to eat at home because the cost of dining out is more expensive. obviously, that's a b

i like smucker for two reasons. one is, this is a company that has truly changed its commercial model for its core business. i think that's underappreciated by the street. they have inbested more in data analytics and management category and that improved their biggest customer, walmart. walmart is the fastest growing customer out there because of consumers trading down. smucker has improved their relationship there, gained category advisership and now walmart is 34% of their sales. secondly, look, i'm going to take the other side of concerns that people have about indulgent snacks like hostess. i think consumer demand is resilient and will continue. there's a lot of worry that those drugs will penetrate as much as 30 million consumers. i've worked with the td pharma team here, which is excellent and forecasting something much lower than that. and i think that's more realistic. i think the reality is different than the concerns on gop1s. >> there's a lot of theories floating around how it's going to change consumer

i think smucker can work its way higher, although i wouldn't recommend it if not for the strength of its coffee and peanut butter brands. another good safety play with the pet food kicker, they are into pet snacking. what about petco and chewy? they have become two of the most controversial stocks in the market. petco became public in january 2021 at $18. the stock traded up to 31 bucks but never saw those levels again. it now languishes at nine bucks. what a come down. does the stock at petco deserve this treatment? not if you look at last quarter where same-store sales grew by 5% year over year. gross profit down 1% in the fourth quarter. gross margin down 220 basis points, 39.8 year over year. some of that is mixed shift and trending issues. here's the problem. the stock which is affectionately known as its symbol woof was a private equity deal meaning previous owners loaded the company up with debt and foisted the stock on the public with an ipo. this is the third time petco has come public. come on. this has 4.2 billion in total liabilities. in an environment where we're worried
